Israel Designates October 7 Bomb Shelters as Heritage Sites
Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu designated bomb shelters in Gaza border communities as national heritage sites to preserve evidence of the October 7 massacre.
The Israeli Ministry of Heritage has designated bomb shelters in Gaza border communities as national heritage sites and antiquities. Amichai Eliyahu, the Heritage Minister, invoked the Antiquities Law to provide legal protection for these structures, including the shelter where Aner Shapira was killed.
The measure prevents local efforts to repaint or remove the shelters during area cleanup operations. While ownership of the structures remains unchanged, any physical alterations now require prior approval from the Ministry of Heritage and the Israel Antiquities Authority.
Eliyahu stated that the initiative ensures stories of heroism and loss are told from within these spaces rather than disappearing due to bureaucratic considerations. He described the shelters as scenes of a struggle for survival and bloodshed that cannot be measured, aiming to preserve them as memorial and commemoration sites for future generations.
