Centinela Mine Workers Strike Over Pay Disparities in Chile

Workers at the Centinela copper mine began a strike on October 9 after mediation failed between Antofagasta and two labor unions.

Workers at the Centinela copper mine in Chile began a strike on October 9, 2026, following the failure of mandatory mediation between the mining company and labor unions. The Minera Esperanza and Distrito Centinela unions, representing more than 700 employees, are protesting disparities in pay and benefits among workers performing identical roles.

The Centinela mine is a critical production hub for Antofagasta, contributing over 35% of the company's total output. In 2025, the site produced 240,400 metric tons of copper. Union leaders warned that copper production could begin to decrease within two weeks if the walkout continues.

Financial analysts at JPMorgan warned that a prolonged stoppage could significantly impact overall production and delay the expansion of the mine's concentrator. This labor dispute occurs while London copper futures remain near record highs, driven by global scarcity and unprecedentedly low inventories.
