France Launches Judicial Operation After Nationwide Looting Spree
The French government is pursuing vandals and providing business aid following nationwide unrest that left thousands arrested and hundreds of millions of euros in damages.
Nationwide protests in France involving students and citizens opposing the high cost of living escalated into widespread violence, arson, and looting last weekend. Bands of people dressed in black targeted businesses in Paris, Lyons, Marseilles, and Nice, resulting in approximately 2,400 arrests and nearly 1,000 injured law enforcement officers.
The French Republic is responding with a massive judicial operation to identify perpetrators using fingerprints and social media footage. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced the government will expedite legislation to make vandals or their parents financially liable for repair costs. To mitigate the economic impact, the government is providing financial support and furlough schemes for affected business owners.
France’s Chambers of Commerce and Industry estimates that at least 3,000 businesses were affected, with total financial losses reaching several hundred million euros. The European Commission condemned the attacks on public buildings and people as unacceptable. European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier further called on online platforms to use the Digital Services Act to mitigate the amplification of violence and incitement.
