Romania Trade Deficit Exceeds 22 Billion Euros in 2026
Romania's trade deficit grew by over 307 million euros in the first eight months of 2026 due to rising fuel and chemical costs.
The National Institute of Statistics reported that Romania's trade deficit exceeded 22 billion euros between January and August 2026. This figure represents a 1.4% increase over the same period in 2025, with the deficit widening by more than 307 million euros.
Total imports for the period reached over 88 billion euros, while exports totaled nearly 66 billion euros. The imbalance is driven by increased import volumes and rising global prices for chemical products and fuels. Machinery and transport equipment continued to dominate trade, comprising 45% of exports and 36% of imports. More than 70% of the country's goods trade occurred with European Union member states.
Economic analysts warn that the persistent deficit signals an underdeveloped domestic production base. They suggest the trend could lead to increased external debt, currency depreciation, and a reduction in consumer purchasing power.
