India Solar Capacity Grows 57-Fold to 162.15 GW

India's installed solar power capacity grew 57-fold between 2014 and June 30, 2026, rising from 2.82 GW to 162.15 GW. Pralhad Joshi, Minister of New and Renewable Energy, informed Parliament that this expansion makes India the third-largest country globally in solar capacity. The total includes 125.60 GW from utility-scale projects, 30.11 GW from rooftop projects, and 6.43 GW from off-grid projects.

Domestic growth has been supported by the National Solar Mission and the Production Linked Incentive scheme, which saw investments of approximately Rs. 73,400 crore. Consequently, solar module imports dropped from USD 4,354 million in FY 2023-24 to USD 994 million in FY 2025-26. The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has also provided rooftop systems to 47.26 lakh households.

Simultaneously, the government reported that total installed wind energy capacity reached 57,443 MW, ranking India fourth globally as of December 31, 2025. Minister of State Shripad Yesso Naik noted that wind power generation totaled 106 billion units during the 2025-26 financial year. To sustain this momentum, the government implemented the Green Energy Corridor Scheme, permitted 100 percent Foreign Direct Investment via the automatic route, and introduced the National Repowering and Life Extension Policy for Wind Power Projects 2023.
