Senator David Pocock Demands Tax Guarantees for Data Center Boom
Senator David Pocock is calling for stricter tax and environmental regulations as Australia's data center sector expands with over 250 existing and planned projects.
David Pocock, an Independent Senator, is demanding government assurances that Australia will benefit from the country's data center expansion. With 162 existing centers and more than 90 projects in development, Pocock argues that profits from the sector are flowing offshore rather than supporting the domestic economy.
Data from the Australian Taxation Office reveals that some companies in the sector generate hundreds of millions in income while paying no domestic tax. Pocock is calling for guarantees that these companies pay Australian taxes and commit to sustainable energy and water usage.
In response, the federal government released non-binding expectations for AI infrastructure developers to invest in local jobs and renewable energy. Minister for Industry Tim Ayres stated through a spokesperson that multinational companies making profits in Australia should pay tax on those earnings.
