NDC Challenges Delta State House Vacancy of Collins Egbetanah
The Nigeria Democratic Congress is legally challenging the Delta State House of Assembly's decision to declare lawmaker Collins Egbetanah's seat vacant after he defected from the APC.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the Delta State House of Assembly's decision to declare the seat of Hon. Collins Egbetanah, representing the Udu Constituency, vacant. The legislative body took this action following Egbetanah's resignation from the All Progressives Congress and his subsequent defection to the NDC on April 30, 2026.
The NDC describes the vacancy declaration as unconstitutional and politically motivated, asserting that it violates Egbetanah's right to free assembly and association. The party alleges that Egbetanah was politically isolated and denied salaries and entitlements for several months after Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other Peoples Democratic Party members defected to the APC.
In response, the NDC has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to disregard the assembly's action. The party has initiated legal proceedings to challenge the vacancy and ensure the Udu Constituency maintains representation. Neither the Delta State House of Assembly nor the Independent National Electoral Commission has issued a public response to these demands.
