Dimon Warns NYC Mayor Mamdani Against Ideology-Driven Tax Policy

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon met Mayor Zohran Mamdani and criticized his pied-à-terre tax proposal as embarrassing and ideologically driven.

Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, held a private meeting with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on May 18 to discuss the city's economic competitiveness and the mayor's progressive policy agenda. Dimon later described the meeting as pleasant and earnest but issued sharp warnings about ideology-driven governance, telling Fox Business Network that mayors can fail abysmally when ideology blinds them to practical, realistic policy.

Dimon criticized Mamdani's proposed pied-à-terre tax, which would impose an annual surcharge on high-value second homes for owners whose primary residences are outside the city. Reports varied on the threshold, with some describing it as targeting properties valued at $1 million or more and others specifying a $5 million floor for one- to three-family homes and co-ops. Dimon called the proposal embarrassing and urged the mayor to focus on fixing policy for affordable housing and childcare rather than raising taxes or increasing spending.

The meeting occurred amid escalating tensions between Mamdani and Wall Street leaders. Mamdani filmed a promotional video for the tax outside a penthouse owned by Citadel founder Ken Griffin, who called the move creepy and responded by expanding operations in Florida. Griffin also suggested that a planned $6 billion Park Avenue development could be scrapped. Dimon expressed willingness to help the mayor implement practical solutions but reiterated that good policy does not require higher taxes.
