Keisha Lance Bottoms Wins Historic Georgia Gubernatorial Sweep

Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman elected governor of a U.S. state after leading a Democratic sweep of Georgia's executive branch.

Democratic candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms won the 2026 Georgia gubernatorial election, becoming the first Black woman to govern a U.S. state and the first Democrat to hold the office since 1998. Bottoms defeated Republican Rick Jackson, a billionaire who spent over $200 million on his campaign, winning approximately 54.4% of the vote. Her platform focused on expanding Medicaid, raising the minimum wage to $15, and repealing the state's abortion ban after fetal cardiac activity is detected.

The victory was part of an unprecedented Democratic sweep of Georgia's executive branch. Women won eight statewide races, including Tanya Miller, who became the first woman and first Black woman elected as attorney general by defeating Republican Brian Strickland. Penny Brown Reynolds became the first Black woman elected secretary of state. Other Democratic wins included Keisha Sean Waites as insurance and safety fire commissioner, Nikki Porcher as labor commissioner, Lydia Powell as state school superintendent, Katherine Juhan-Arnold as agriculture commissioner, and Josh McLaurin as the first Democratic lieutenant governor in nearly 20 years.

Beyond Georgia, Democrats secured a majority of U.S. governorships for the first time in two decades, flipping strongholds in Texas, Iowa, and Ohio. This shift is viewed as a rebuke of President Donald Trump and his policy agenda. While Bottoms will be sworn in in January, she faces a Republican-dominated General Assembly. In other Georgia races, Senator Jon Ossoff secured re-election after defeating Representative Mike Collins.
