John Ternus Succeeds Tim Cook as Apple CEO

John Ternus has assumed the role of CEO at Apple Inc., succeeding Tim Cook, who transitions to executive chairman to manage global policy and government relations.

Following a succession plan announced in April 2026, John Ternus officially became the Chief Executive Officer of Apple Inc. on September 1, 2026. Ternus, a 25-year company veteran and former senior vice president of hardware engineering, succeeds Tim Cook, who led the company for 15 years. Cook has transitioned to the role of executive chairman, where he will continue to manage relationships with global policymakers, including the Chinese government and the U.S. administration.

Under Cook's tenure since 2011, Apple's market capitalization grew from approximately $350 billion to over $4.6 trillion. Ternus now inherits a company facing pressure to accelerate its artificial intelligence capabilities to compete with rivals like Microsoft and Google, while managing a global memory component crisis and supply chain vulnerabilities in China.

Ternus is implementing a strategic shift toward a product- and engineering-led approach. This includes a broad restructuring of the executive team, with several long-term leaders expected to depart and others, such as Eddy Cue and Kevan Parekh, seeing expanded roles. According to SEC filings, Ternus will receive a compensation package worth approximately $58 million for fiscal 2027, with the majority tied to performance relative to the S&P 500.

Ternus is scheduled to make his first major public appearance as CEO on September 9 at the Steve Jobs Theater. The event is expected to unveil the company's first foldable iPhone, a touchscreen MacBook Pro, and a rebuilt Siri powered by large language models.
