Competition Bureau of Canada Seeks to Block Nortera Acquisition
The Competition Bureau of Canada asked the Competition Tribunal to block Nortera Foods' acquisition of Green Giant and Le Sieur brands to prevent higher grocery prices.
The Competition Bureau of Canada has applied to the Competition Tribunal of Canada to block the proposed acquisition of the Green Giant and Le Sieur canned and frozen vegetable brands by Nortera Foods. The federal agency argues that because Nortera is already the dominant processor of these products in Canada through its Del Monte and Arctic Gardens brands, the merger would eliminate its only major national competitor.
Regulators assert that the transaction would substantially reduce competition in a highly concentrated market, likely leading to higher prices and fewer choices for staple grocery items. The Bureau also requested an order to prevent Nortera and B&G Foods from closing the transaction, which was originally reached in October 2025, until the Tribunal reaches a final decision.
Nortera Foods, based in Brossard, Quebec, and B&G Foods oppose the challenge. They contend the deal supports the long-term viability of domestic vegetable production and enhances food security against increasing import pressures. B&G Foods stated that the transaction is in the best interests of stakeholders and Canadian consumers, and the company is currently evaluating its options while remaining in discussions with Nortera.
