AI Infrastructure Crisis Hits CoreWeave After Firmus IPO Withdrawal

CoreWeave faces a financial crisis as investors reject the neocloud business model following the withdrawal of a $44 billion Firmus IPO.

The AI infrastructure sector is experiencing a financial crisis as investors grow skeptical of the neocloud business model. CoreWeave, a leading neocloud provider, saw its share price drop 15% and bond yields rise to 15%, with credit default swaps indicating a 60% chance of default within five years.

This volatility follows the decision by data center operator Firmus to withdraw a $44 billion initial public offering after investors rejected its valuation. The sector is currently struggling with circular financing, where chipmaker Nvidia invests in customers to fund the purchase of its own GPUs. This has created a significant gap between massive capital expenditures and actual revenue.

A Gartner analysis predicts that AI providers will spend $6 trillion on infrastructure by 2030 but will fail to generate the $8.5 trillion in revenue needed for a 12% return on capital. The research firm forecasts that 80% of neocloud operators will cease independent operations by 2030. CoreWeave CEO Mike Intrator defended the company's model against the market volatility.
