Jim Paulsen Warns of Slowdown Using Walmart Recession Signal

Strategist Jim Paulsen predicts a U.S. economic slowdown and potential Federal Reserve rate cuts based on Walmart's stock outperforming luxury brands.

Wall Street strategist Jim Paulsen warns that the United States economy is heading for a slowdown, which may force the Federal Reserve System to cut interest rates. Paulsen bases this prediction on the Walmart Recession Signal, a gauge comparing the stock price of Walmart to a global basket of luxury stocks.

According to Paulsen, Walmart's stock typically outperforms luxury stocks when consumers tighten budgets and shift toward discount retailers. He notes this pattern has preceded the last four recessions and every Federal Reserve easing cycle since 1990. While Walmart underperformed from May to August, Paulsen estimates the company has outpaced the S&P 500 Global Luxury Stock Price Index by approximately 21% since August, suggesting renewed economic weakness.

This outlook contrasts with recent actions by the Federal Reserve System, which implemented a 25 basis point rate hike in September to control inflation amid rising oil prices and a strong labor market. Paulsen suggests the current stock performance is telling a story of weakness that could eventually force policy officials to return to accommodative actions.
