Turkmenistan Proposes Black Sea Cargo Terminal During Georgia State Visit
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov visited Georgia to discuss expanding the Middle Corridor and establishing a Turkmen logistics terminal on the Georgian coast.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov of Turkmenistan conducted his first state visit to Georgia on July 16 and 17, 2026. During meetings in Tbilisi with President Mikheil Kavelashvili and Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, the leaders focused on expanding the Middle Corridor—the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route—to enhance transport links between Central Asia and Europe.
Berdimuhamedov proposed the establishment of a Turkmen logistics terminal on Georgia's Black Sea coast, potentially utilizing the under-construction deep-water port of Anaklia. To support these goals, the leaders held a Turkmen–Georgian Business Forum at the Expo Georgia exhibition centre, where Berdimuhamedov highlighted Turkmenistan's industrial growth in fuel and energy and its target of maintaining GDP growth at 6.3 percent.
Both nations aim to diversify cooperation beyond transport into energy, agriculture, education, and culture to solidify Georgia's role as a strategic transit hub. While bilateral trade grew in early 2026 following a decline from 2021 levels, the two governments seek to implement public-private partnerships to realize these infrastructure projects.
