Robinhood Shares Surge After SEC Tokenization Exemption
Robinhood Markets Inc. shares rose nearly 9% following a Securities and Exchange Commission exemption for tokenized stock trading and strong quarterly earnings.
Robinhood Markets Inc. shares surged 8.94% to $119.62 on Friday, driven by a new regulatory exemption from the Securities and Exchange Commission and a rally in crypto-linked equities. The SEC issued an innovation exemption to facilitate the trading of tokenized stocks registered under the National Market System, a move that benefits the company's proprietary Robinhood Chain platform.
The rally follows a volatile week in which the United States Department of Justice charged two former Robinhood engineers with fraud related to insider trading of cryptocurrency listings. Despite these legal challenges, the company reported strong financial results, including quarterly revenue of $1.31 billion and net income of $561 million. Growth was further bolstered by fee revenue from Robinhood Chain and the company's Rothera prediction-market venture.
While the SEC's decision provided a boost, some analysts pointed to continued regulatory uncertainty after the U.S. Senate failed to pass the CLARITY Act, which aimed to establish guidelines for digital assets. Additionally, AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron criticized tokenized stock products, describing them as fake equity.
