India Opens Jabil Plant to Scale Sovereign AI Infrastructure

India is expanding its sovereign AI ecosystem by opening a Jabil components facility and allocating 88,000 GPUs to support domestic foundational models.

The Government of India is accelerating the development of a sovereign artificial intelligence ecosystem to reduce reliance on foreign platforms following U.S. restrictions on Anthropic's Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models. As part of this strategy, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated a high-tech Jabil India Pvt Ltd manufacturing facility in Ranjangaon, Maharashtra, on June 17, 2026. The plant produces components for AI data centers, supported by Jabil's investment of over Rs 2,000 crore and the government's Telecom Production-Linked Incentive Scheme.

To bolster domestic capabilities, the state is supporting approximately 20 foundational models through the IndiaAI Mission, including the multilingual BharatGen and various Sarvam AI models. The government is further expanding data center capacity and allocating 88,000 GPUs to startups and researchers via the India Semiconductor Mission.

Private sector growth is mirroring these state efforts. New Relic CEO Ashan Willy reported that 72% of the company's Indian clients are deploying AI, a rate significantly higher than the 40% global median. This surge is driven by a robust startup ecosystem and the growing influence of Global Capability Centers in technology procurement.
