India's July Unemployment Rate Drops to 5.1 Percent
The National Statistics Office reports India's unemployment rate fell to 5.1 percent in July 2026, though private analysts dispute the accuracy of official metrics.
The National Statistics Office reported that India's overall unemployment rate for persons aged 15 and above fell to a four-month low of 5.1 percent in July 2026, down from 5.5 percent in June. This decline was primarily driven by rural unemployment, which dropped to 4.5 percent from 5 percent. Urban unemployment remained relatively steady, with reports varying slightly between a near-constant rate and a marginal increase to 6.7 percent due to rising joblessness among urban females.
Labor market indicators showed general firming, with the Labour Force Participation Rate rising to 55.4 percent and the Worker Population Ratio improving to 52.5 percent. A significant driver of this growth was the rural female Worker Population Ratio, which climbed to 37.2 percent from 34.7 percent in June. These monthly estimates were based on a survey of 371,021 people.
However, these official figures face significant criticism. The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy has reported substantially higher unemployment rates, recording 7.7 percent in April 2025. Independent economists and the International Labour Organization argue that official data masks a crisis of underemployment and precarious work. Critics contend that the government's methodology is inadequate because it classifies minimal activity, such as working one hour a week or performing unpaid family labor, as formal employment.
