HDFC Bank Chairman Rajiv Kumar Pledges Governance Reforms and Growth
HDFC Bank Chairman Rajiv Kumar assured shareholders of strong internal controls and financial recovery during the lender's 32nd annual general meeting.
During HDFC Bank's 32nd annual general meeting on August 5, part-time chairman Rajiv Kumar addressed shareholders regarding the bank's governance standards and financial trajectory. Kumar asserted that the bank's internal control systems are strong and pledged that future board appointments will be based strictly on merit, integrity, and professional excellence. These assurances follow the March resignation of former chairman Atanu Chakraborty over ethical divergences and scrutiny regarding the potential third-term re-appointment of CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan.
On the financial front, Kumar stated that the merger with HDFC Limited is delivering meaningful synergies, particularly in cross-selling, with over 95% of new home loan customers opening savings accounts. He projected that the current account/savings account ratio and net interest margins, which were pressured by the merger, will improve in coming quarters. He noted that deposits grew 14.4 percent in FY26, outpacing the broader banking system's 11.5 percent growth.
The announcements follow first-quarter FY27 results showing a 5% year-on-year increase in net profit to ₹19,059 crore and a 6.7% increase in net interest income to ₹33,534 crore. While gross non-performing assets rose slightly to 1.17% from 1.15%, provisions declined to ₹3,060 crore. CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan noted that Kumar's appointment has resolved leadership transition uncertainties.
