Civic Groups Warn of Violence Ahead of Osun Election

Civic observation groups and human rights advocates are warning of significant threats to the Osun State governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026. Amnesty International Nigeria predicts widespread voter apathy, with Country Director Isa Sanusi stating that citizens may avoid polling units to ensure their own safety following a surge in instability.

Reports indicate a volatile environment, with the Centre for Credible Leadership and Citizens Awareness stating that approximately 40 people have been killed in pre-election violence. Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi has been accused of using inflammatory rhetoric and mobilizing thugs to intimidate opposition voters in Ijeshaland, including a video where he allegedly instructed supporters to kill members of the Accord Party.

Beyond physical violence, Yiaga Africa and other observers have raised alarms over vote buying, hate speech, and thuggery. Technical concerns have also emerged regarding the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), which reportedly failed to recognize fingerprints and facial features during mock exercises. These organizations have urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to resolve these glitches and called for strict neutrality from security agencies to ensure the contest is decided by ballots rather than bullets.
