Pinarayi Vijayan Demands Resignation of Chief Election Commissioner
Pinarayi Vijayan and opposition groups are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged autocratic decisions and electoral roll irregularities.
Former Kerala Chief Minister and CPI(M) leader Pinarayi Vijayan called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing him of acting like an "autocrat" and unilaterally implementing decisions. Vijayan claimed the Election Commission of India is being misused to serve an "RSS-BJP agenda" and asserted that "no protest can be crushed or wiped out through repression."
Protests erupted on Friday in Thiruvananthapuram, where students and organizations marched to Lok Bhavan, and in Delhi, where demonstrators gathered near Bangla Sahib Gurudwara. The movement, supported by the INDIA bloc and the Cockroach Janata Party, demands the sacking of Kumar and the scrapping of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, which opposition groups allege are riddled with irregularities.
Vijayan further criticized the denotification of Jantar Mantar as a protest site in Delhi, framing the move as part of a broader effort to suppress a nationwide demand for a Chief Election Commissioner who has "undermined democratic principles and denied people their voting rights."
