ACT Government Develops New Data Centre Investment Framework

The ACT government is creating a data centre framework to attract high-value jobs and investment while protecting residential areas and water security.

The Australian Capital Territory government is developing a new data centre framework designed to attract investment and high-value jobs while safeguarding residential areas, housing, and water security. Chief Minister Andrew Barr stated the strategy will establish clear planning rules and environmental safeguards, while exploring the co-location of data centres with battery storage and renewable energy.

This local initiative coincides with a broader national effort by the Commonwealth government to implement mandatory national data centre standards and AI laws by early 2027. To further support technological growth, the ACT government plans to release an artificial intelligence statement later this year to outline how AI can empower workers and drive innovation.

CDC Data Centres, a Canberra-based operator, welcomed the framework. Chief Executive Greg Boorer noted that providing certainty regarding infrastructure and sustainability expectations would support responsible growth. The company's existing facilities currently contribute approximately $65 million annually to the ACT economy and support roughly 230 jobs.
