Maine Gubernatorial Candidates Debate Housing and Budget in Bangor
Democratic nominee Hannah Pingree, Republican Bobby Charles, and independent Rick Bennett debated housing, healthcare, and state spending during a televised event in Bangor.
Democratic nominee Hannah Pingree, Republican nominee Bobby Charles, and independent candidate Rick Bennett participated in the second of four gubernatorial debates on October 9, 2026, at the Gracie Theatre in Bangor. The event followed an earlier announcement that CBS13 and FOX23 would host the candidates to provide insight into the race for the Blaine House.
During the debate, Bobby Charles focused his strategy on attacking Pingree, linking her to the record of Governor Janet Mills and questioning state funding awarded to a nonprofit Pingree previously led. Pingree avoided direct confrontation with Charles, instead linking his positions on tariffs and the war in Iran to Donald Trump. Rick Bennett criticized the two-party system, describing it as a "political industrial complex."
Despite their ideological differences, the candidates found consensus on several issues. All three agreed that Maine's housing production is too slow and that the state struggles to retain its healthcare workforce. Pingree and Bennett found common ground on Indigenous sovereignty and pausing data center development, while Charles and Bennett agreed that overspending caused the state budget shortfall.
