IMF Chief Warns AI Tsunami Threatens Entry-Level Jobs

Kristalina Georgieva warns that artificial intelligence may eliminate entry-level roles, complicating job placements for young graduates despite broader firm growth.

Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund Kristalina Georgieva warned that an AI tsunami may eliminate numerous entry-level roles, making it significantly harder for young people to secure initial job placements. This risk is most acute in media and communications, where AI is rapidly replacing roles such as storyboard illustrators and copywriters.

Other research suggests a more nuanced impact. A 2025 report from the Brookings Institution indicates that AI adoption has generally contributed to firm growth and employment rather than widespread job loss. While agriculture remains a slow adopter, businesses are increasingly redesigning workflows through AI experimentation and seeking employees with higher technical skills.

Labor market shifts are manifesting not only through direct replacement but also via headcount reductions enabled by AI-driven efficiency. Some companies are reallocating funds to pay for AI technology, leading to layoffs. To mitigate these risks, educators like Lukasz Swiatek of the University of New South Wales suggest that students transition from AI literacy to AI fluency and develop durable skills such as emotional intelligence and critical thinking.
