Kalonzo Musyoka and Rigathi Gachagua Meet Over Opposition Unity
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka met with Rigathi Gachagua to discuss a joint 2027 presidential candidate amid disputes over the endorsement of Senator Edwin Sifuna.
Wiper Patriotic Front leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka met with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Democratic Action Party leader Eugene Wamalwa at Gachagua's Wamunyoro home in Nyeri County on Monday. The leaders discussed opposition unity and the selection of a joint presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
The meeting sparked a public dispute over the preferred candidate. Cleophas Malala, deputy leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), claimed the talks were intended to persuade Musyoka to support Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna. Malala noted that Gachagua had previously met with leaders of the Linda Mwananchi movement, associated with Sifuna, during a two-month tour of the United States.
Musyoka and his party rejected these claims. Speaking at a church service in Kirinyaga County, Musyoka characterized his engagement with Gachagua as a meeting between friends and warned that agents were being paid to create disunity within the opposition. Wiper spokesperson Ndegwa Njiru dismissed Malala's assertions as a divisive narrative and theatrical, accusing him of attempting to drive a knife through the heart of the opposition.
During his public appearance, Musyoka also addressed recent tragedies, including a building collapse in Eastleigh and a fatal road accident on the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway. He pledged to transform that highway into a dual carriageway to improve safety.
