Former federal and state Liberal politician Bruce Baird died at age 84 in Singapore after suffering a fall while returning from a European holiday.
Baird served as a New South Wales minister from 1988 to 1995, playing a key role in securing the 2000 Olympic Games for Sydney. He later represented the federal seat of Cook in the House of Representatives from 1998 until his retirement in 2007. Throughout his tenure, he became known for his advocacy for refugees and his opposition to the Howard government's mandatory detention policies, a stance that reportedly cost him a federal frontbench position.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and former Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who succeeded Baird in his federal seat, praised his commitment to public service and humanity. NSW Liberal leader Kellie Sloane also highlighted his compassion and sense of service. He is survived by three children: former NSW premier Mike Baird, journalist Julia Baird, and Steve Baird.
