Canada Renews Atlantic Fisheries Fund With $300 Million
The Government of Canada and four Atlantic provinces committed over $300 million to modernize the seafood sector and diversify global markets over five years.
The Government of Canada and the four Atlantic provinces renewed the Atlantic Fisheries Fund on October 15, 2026, committing more than $300 million in strategic investments over the next five years. The federal government provides 60% of the funding, while Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador contribute the remaining 40%.
The renewed fund targets four primary pillars: innovation, infrastructure, science partnerships, and a new focus on market diversification. This latest pillar aims to make the seafood sector more resilient to global trade disruptions. Minister of Fisheries Joanne Thompson stated, "When Atlantic seafood sells to more of the world, we build Canada strong."
Since its launch in 2017, the fund has provided over $370 million for more than 1,300 projects. The program began accepting new applications immediately following the announcement in Moncton.
