Incumbent Tom Barrett, an Army veteran in his first term, attempted to distance himself from President Donald Trump by introducing legislation to protect local control over data centers and supporting war powers resolutions. Lawrence argued these efforts were insufficient. The race occurred amid voter dissatisfaction with the economy under the Trump administration and the ongoing war with Iran.

During the campaign, Lawrence faced scrutiny over deleted social media posts. He stated that he allowed his membership in the Democratic Socialists of America to lapse in July to avoid ideological labels that he believed divide voters.
