Chinese Humanoid Robots Break World Records at Beijing Games

The second World Humanoid Robot Games opened on August 22, 2026, at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing, featuring 2,056 robots from 16 countries. Several Chinese robots broke human world records, including the Tiangong Ultra from X-Humanoid, which completed a 100-meter sprint in 9.39 seconds, surpassing Usain Bolt's 9.58-second record. A robot from Honor, named Blitz or Lightning, recorded an even faster trial time of 9.32 seconds. Other achievements included a 2.88-meter standing high jump by X-Humanoid and a 400-meter sprint of 39.7 seconds by a robot from the Hubei province Humanoid Robotics Innovation Center.

Despite these feats, the event was marked by technical failures, including robots catching fire, losing limbs, and crashing into walls. The five-day competition combines Olympic-style sports with 21 scenario-based tests in logistics and emergency response to evaluate robotic autonomy. Huawei and China Unicom Beijing provided the digital infrastructure, deploying a 5G-A GigaUplink network to support real-time telemetry and millisecond-level responsiveness.

The games occur amid escalating geopolitical tensions. The Federal Communications Commission recently banned imports of new foreign-made humanoid robots, and the U.S. Department of Defense blacklisted Unitree Robotics for alleged ties to the Chinese military. While the U.S. cites national security and domestic industry protection, China continues to dominate the sector, producing 80% of the world's humanoid robots.
