IndiGo Raises Fares After Third Consecutive Quarterly Loss

IndiGo CEO Willie Walsh announced fare increases following a net loss of ₹1,879 crore driven by surging fuel costs.

IndiGo CEO Willie Walsh announced the airline has no choice but to increase fares after fuel expenses surged 67% year-on-year to nearly $1 billion. The price hikes follow a reported net loss of ₹1,879 crore for the July-September quarter, marking the third consecutive quarterly loss for the airline's parent company, InterGlobe Aviation Ltd.

While revenue grew 26% to ₹23,364 crore, geopolitical turmoil and volatile aviation turbine fuel prices eroded profits. In response, IndiGo implemented revised fuel charges on October 6, raising domestic fees by ₹100 to ₹350 per sector and international charges by up to ₹10,000 for flights to Europe.

The financial pressure coincides with a decline in demand. The airline reported a 4.5% drop in passenger numbers and a decrease in its passenger load factor to 80.3% during the quarter. Walsh stated the company will continue to seek internal measures to offset the significant price increases.
