Tesla Launches Cybercab Robotaxi Service in Austin

Tesla launched the Cybercab, a steering-wheel-free autonomous taxi in downtown Austin, targeting a $30,000 retail price to compete with Waymo and Uber.

Tesla launched the Cybercab in downtown Austin on September 15, introducing a fully autonomous robotaxi that lacks a steering wheel, pedals, dashboard, and side mirrors. The gold-painted vehicle features upward-swinging doors and a large interior entertainment screen. CEO Elon Musk designed the service to compete directly with Waymo, Uber, and Lyft, targeting a retail price of $30,000 and operating costs between $0.20 and $0.40 per mile.

Early operations show the vehicle navigates city traffic assertively, though it cannot currently operate on highways, which prevents trips to airports. Users have also reported reliability issues characterized by long wait times. Following the launch, Tesla's market value rose to approximately $1.1 trillion.

Safety concerns have emerged from local authorities. Austin fire officials questioned the ability to extricate passengers if electronic systems fail during an emergency, citing the lack of traditional manual controls. Despite these safety and operational hurdles, some market analysts suggest the company could eventually capture 80% of the robotaxi business.
