California Launches First Statewide AI-Unemployment Tracker

Governor Gavin Newsom launched a public dashboard to monitor AI-linked job losses and identify where to deploy workforce retraining and support services.

Governor Gavin Newsom launched the California AI-Unemployment Tracker on June 25, 2026, creating the first statewide system in the U.S. designed to monitor the impact of artificial intelligence on the labor market. Developed through a partnership between the Governor's office, the Employment Development Department, and the California Policy Lab at UCLA, the dashboard serves as an early warning system by linking monthly unemployment insurance claims with AI-exposure measures across various demographics and industries.

The initiative follows a May executive order from Newsom requiring state agencies to develop plans to mitigate AI-driven economic disruption. Initial data through May 2026 shows no evidence of large-scale AI-related layoffs across the state. However, researchers identified a sustained increase in unemployment claims since 2022 among college-educated workers in high-exposure occupations, particularly within tech-heavy sectors and the San Francisco Bay Area.

State officials intend to use the tracker's monthly updates to deploy targeted interventions, including workforce retraining, career counseling, and health-coverage assistance. While the tool identifies statistical patterns, researchers noted that the tracker cannot definitively prove that specific jobs were eliminated solely due to AI, as other economic factors may influence the data.
