UK Government Proposes National Police Service and PCC Abolition

The Government of the United Kingdom is implementing a major restructuring of policing across England and Wales, centered on the abolition of the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) role by May 2028. The government intends to absorb these roles into regional mayoralties to save at least £100 million, with the goal of increasing funding for frontline services. A accompanying White Paper proposes the creation of a National Police Service to manage counter-terrorism and national policing functions.

Local leaders have raised concerns regarding the shift toward nationalization. During an August cabinet meeting in Colwyn Bay, Julie Fallon, leader of Conwy County Council, warned that scrutiny would be "more needed than ever" if a national force is established, noting the heavy burden such oversight would place on council leaders.

Members of the North Wales Police and Crime Panel, including Alan Hunter, expressed further apprehension that the restructuring could disrupt operational links with police forces in north-west England. They also warned that nationalization could negatively impact Welsh language and culture.
