WPP Commerce Report Reveals AI Shopping Trust Gap
WPP Commerce reports that over half of consumers distrust AI-powered shopping tools due to perceived commercial influence despite high adoption rates.
A research report from WPP Commerce involving 28,000 consumers across 17 countries reveals a significant trust gap in AI-powered shopping tools. While 82% of consumers utilize AI, more than half express concern that these tools are influenced by commercial interests. This skepticism manifests in shopping behaviors, as consumers frequently skip AI-generated content or report lower trust levels when brands employ it.
Consumers continue to prioritize human judgment over automation. According to the study, 33% of shoppers refuse to allow AI to make purchases on their behalf, and 58% cross-check AI-generated product recommendations before buying.
Brent Taylor, global CEO of WPP Commerce, noted that while AI is a dominant topic in business, consumer behavior tells a more nuanced story. He stated that long-term brand loyalty now requires earning confidence through transparency and consistency to overcome these hesitations.
