Irish Job Postings Hit Five-Year Low as AI Reshapes Hiring

Job postings on the hiring platform Indeed fell to their lowest level in over five years in July, decreasing 13.6% compared to the previous year. Despite this decline, the Irish labor market remains near full employment with an unemployment rate of 5%. While annual postings decreased by 9.1% overall, a monthly increase of 2.7% suggests hiring demand is steadying and returning to pre-pandemic baselines.

Recruitment experts attribute the drop in public advertisements to a shift toward targeted hiring via LinkedIn, internal referrals, and specialized recruiters. This shift is partly driven by an AI arms race, where jobseekers use artificial intelligence to apply for hundreds of roles while employers use the technology to screen massive volumes of applications. Consequently, some firms are relying more on specialized recruiters to verify candidates.

Ireland currently leads European and U.S. markets in integrating AI into job descriptions, with 14.7% of postings mentioning AI terms. This trend is creating demand for new skills across various sectors beyond traditional technology roles. However, the impact is uneven; a Department of Finance report noted a more than 20% drop in ICT employment for workers aged 15 to 29 between 2023 and 2025. In terms of compensation, posted wages increased by 3.7% year-on-year through July 2026, slightly outpacing consumer price inflation of 3.4%.
