California Secures $6 Million Settlement From 23andMe

California Attorney General Rob Bonta secured a $6 million settlement from 23andMe to resolve claims following a data breach affecting 6.9 million customers.

Rob Bonta, the Attorney General of California, announced a $6 million settlement payment to the state to resolve legal claims stemming from a 2023 data breach at 23andMe. The breach exposed the genetic and personal information of 6.9 million customers, including more than 855,000 residents of California.

The agreement follows unsuccessful legal efforts by the state to block the $305 million sale of 23andMe assets to the TTAM Research Institute, a nonprofit controlled by co-founder Anne Wojcicki. California had argued the transfer violated the Genetic Information Privacy Act because consumers did not provide express consent. Under the terms of the settlement, California will drop all further appeals regarding the sale.

Separately, 23andMe agreed to pay $46.75 million to victims of the breach as part of bankruptcy proceedings that began in March 2025.
