Epic Games Delays Disney Crossover Shooter for AI Pivot

Epic Games delayed an unannounced Star Wars and Marvel crossover shooter to implement an AI-first production pipeline for development.

Epic Games delayed an unannounced crossover shooter featuring Star Wars and Marvel characters, pushing back a launch originally expected in March 2027. The company is now implementing an AI-first production pipeline to complete the project, mandating that developers use generative AI tools including Anthropic's Claude.

Internal communications reveal a strategic shift toward eliminating hand-written code and adopting full AI workflows for artwork. CEO Tim Sweeney stated the pivot aims to enable staff to build "MORE and BETTER stuff" rather than reducing headcount. This transition follows the layoff of more than 1,000 employees last year.

The project is part of a broader partnership with The Walt Disney Company, which previously invested 1.5 billion dollars in Epic Games to create a shared games and entertainment universe. Communications Director Jake Jones defended the move, stating the company is embracing AI-accelerated development led by its own developers.
