Wes Moore and Dan Cox Clash in Maryland Gubernatorial Debate

Governor Wes Moore and Republican challenger Dan Cox debated state deficits, taxes, and federal relations during a televised event in Owings Mills.

Governor Wes Moore and Republican challenger Dan Cox engaged in a heated one-hour televised debate on Tuesday at the MPT studios in Owings Mills, Maryland. The candidates clashed over a $3.3 billion structural deficit, the reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, and the state's immigration policies. Cox accused Moore of budget mismanagement and treating residents like a line of credit, while Moore attributed economic pressures to federal policies under the Trump administration, citing $17 billion in private investment and 31,000 new jobs during his term.

The debate featured sharp personal exchanges. Moore referred to Cox as a "QAnon whackjob," a term previously used by Larry Hogan, and criticized Cox's involvement in the January 6 Capitol events. Cox responded by accusing Moore of embellishing his military record regarding a Bronze Star and questioning whether the governor would commit to serving a full second term.

On federal issues, Moore argued that the Trump administration's actions regarding the FBI headquarters project were illegal and advocated for Maryland to sue the administration. Both candidates expressed support for relocating the FBI headquarters to Prince George's County and agreed on the need for restrictions on data centers. A University of Maryland, Baltimore County poll released the morning of the debate shows Moore holding a 27-point lead over Cox ahead of early voting on October 22.
