Texas Sued Over 500,000 Unprocessed Voter Registrations
The League of Women Voters of Texas and MOVE Texas Civic Fund sued Texas for failing to process 500,000 voter registration applications before the midterm election.
The League of Women Voters of Texas and MOVE Texas Civic Fund filed a lawsuit in Bexar County’s 224th District Court against the state of Texas for failing to process more than 500,000 voter registration applications. The applications, some dating back to October 2025, were submitted through the Texas Department of Public Safety web portal but remained unprocessed due to a software update error.
Plaintiffs argue the failure breaches a 2021 settlement agreement that required the state to maintain a reliable online registration process during driver's license or ID updates. The situation is further complicated by issues with the Texas Secretary of State’s voter registration system, TEAM, which officials say have hindered efforts to clear the backlog before the November 3 midterm election.
Representing the plaintiffs, Karla Maradiaga of the Texas Civil Rights Project stated that the state is in denial about the system issues and has refused to be transparent about the delays. The lawsuit seeks a court order requiring the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Secretary of State’s Office to restore a functioning process, produce records of the failures, and provide proof of compliance within one month.
