Search Teams Recover Four Bodies After Broad Peak Avalanche

An avalanche struck a 10-member international climbing team on Broad Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram Range on July 30, 2026. The disaster occurred at an altitude of approximately 6,600 meters between Camp 2 and Camp 3. Contact with the group, led by renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, was lost on Thursday.

Pakistani Army rescue teams recovered four bodies by Friday. The Government of Gilgit-Baltistan identified three of the deceased as American Mallory Geis, Omani Nathira Ahmed, and Nepalese Pur Bahadur Gurung. A fourth body was located but not immediately identified. Later on Friday, a drone operated by a Chinese climbing team on K2 located six additional climbers; however, their identities and conditions remain unconfirmed. The status of Nirmal Purja and one other climber is currently unknown.

Government authorities in Nepal and Pakistan, supported by the Alpine Club of Pakistan, are coordinating search and recovery efforts despite harsh weather hindering helicopter operations. The Chinese government is verifying whether any of its nationals are among the missing. In response to the incident, Seven Summit Treks canceled all remaining expeditions on Broad Peak and K2.
