Nigeria Hits 74-Month Oil Production High Amid Growth Push

Nigeria's crude and condensate production reached a 74-month high in June 2026, though industry leaders warn that infrastructure gaps hinder a three million bpd target.

Nigeria's total liquid hydrocarbon production reached a 74-month high in June 2026, averaging 1.735 million barrels per day (mbpd). This output, consisting of 1.56 mbpd of crude oil and 0.18 mbpd of condensates, allows the country to meet 104% of its 1.5 mbpd OPEC quota. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission attributed the fourth consecutive month of growth to stable operations, effective turnaround maintenance, and a lack of major pipeline outages.

Despite this recovery from previous losses caused by theft and vandalism, the Government of Nigeria faces pressure to further increase output as global prices rise above the 2026 budget benchmark of $64.85 per barrel. This price surge follows tensions between the United States and Iran in the Strait of Hormuz. While current trends suggest progress toward a 2 mbpd goal, the government maintains a higher national target of three million bpd.

Industry leaders at the 2026 Nigeria Oil and Gas Energy Week cautioned that reaching the three million bpd target requires systemic upgrades. Experts highlighted critical shortages in geoscientists and fabrication capacity, as well as the need to replace obsolete compressors and evacuation systems. Nigeria previously lost approximately $839.22 million in revenue in early 2026 due to failure to meet OPEC quotas.
