Peter Obi Pledges Petroleum Subsidy Return After Corruption Crackdown

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), pledged to restore the petroleum subsidy if elected in the 2027 general elections. Speaking at a town hall meeting in Sokoto on Monday, Obi stated that the reinstatement of the subsidy is only possible if his administration first curbs corruption across all sectors, which he identified as the primary challenge facing Nigeria.

Obi outlined a campaign focused on education, security, and national unity, advocating for a demand-driven approach to policy formulation. His proposed agenda includes connecting all state capitals via railway lines to enhance the transportation of goods and services, alongside priorities in healthcare, job creation, and poverty reduction.

Accompanied by vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso, the delegation visited the Sultan of Sokoto to seek support for their ticket. Kwankwaso focused on the security crisis in the North-West, specifically highlighting the prevalence of banditry, kidnapping, and displacement in rural Sokoto. NDC governorship candidate Shamsudeen Haido also pledged to provide good governance in Sokoto State if elected.

The visit is part of a nationwide consultation effort ahead of the general elections. The Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, followed by governorship elections on March 6, 2027.
