Defense Secretary Bans Anthropic AI Over Surveillance Dispute

The Trump administration is facing internal policy volatility regarding the integration of artificial intelligence into national security. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth banned the AI company Anthropic from military use after CEO Dario Amodei demanded guarantees that the technology would not be used for domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons.

Following the ban, the Air Force ordered contractors to purge Anthropic software, though this directive was later partially reversed. While the Pentagon has largely replaced the Claude for Government model with alternative AI systems, the National Security Agency continues to use Anthropic's Mythos model on an experimental basis to identify vulnerabilities in U.S. and adversarial networks.

This instability occurs as the U.S. attempts to maintain a technological lead over China, which is estimated to be roughly six months behind in advanced model development. The administration has continued to fluctuate on broader AI regulation and Nvidia chip export controls, alternating between hands-off policies and heavy-handed restrictions.
