Hedge Fund Short Positions Hit Five-Year High

Goldman Sachs reports that hedge fund short positions have reached a five-year high, increasing the risk of a sharp stock squeeze if markets rebound.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. reports that hedge funds have significantly increased their stock short positions this month, driving bearish bets toward a five-year high. Data from the firm's prime brokerage desk shows that short sales have exceeded long purchases by a ratio of approximately five to one across global equities.

Short leverage on the firm's books has reached the 99th percentile relative to the past five years. While gross leverage has risen, net leverage among fundamental long/short funds—which measures the extent to which long exposure exceeds shorts—is near a three-year low.

This concentration of bearish positions creates a high-risk environment for investors. The firm warns that such extreme positioning increases the likelihood of a sharp stock squeeze should the markets rebound unexpectedly.
