Indian Defence Committee Requests Sixth-Generation Fighter Aircraft Roadmap

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence has asked the Ministry of Defence for a detailed plan to acquire sixth-generation fighter aircraft through global partnerships.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence requested a detailed roadmap from the Ministry of Defence regarding India's strategy to develop and acquire sixth-generation fighter aircraft. In its 25th Report, tabled in Parliament on August 7, 2026, the committee acknowledged that the Ministry has initiated concerted efforts to join the Future Combat Air System programme led by France.

The committee identified two primary global consortia currently developing these advanced aircraft: one consisting of France and Germany, and another comprising the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan. The Indian Air Force intends to partner with one of these groups to enhance combat capabilities and avoid falling behind in global technical advancements.

To address current security requirements, the committee recommended that the Ministry establish a clear trajectory for the development and acquisition of these aircraft. This move aims to ensure the Indian Air Force maintains a competitive edge in advanced aircraft procurement.
