US Department of Energy Awards $99 Million for Geothermal Projects

The United States Department of Energy announced the selection of 21 projects to receive up to $99 million in funding to advance geothermal energy development. The grants support field-scale tests of next-generation technologies and exploration drilling to identify geothermal resources across the country.

Five of the selected projects will test enhanced geothermal systems, while 16 will focus on exploration drilling. Recipients include Fervo Energy, which will conduct a demonstration in Idaho and drilling in Nevada, as well as Quaise Energy, Zanskar Geothermal, XGS Energy, and Invenergy. To assist future exploration, the department will make the resulting data publicly available through its Geothermal Data Repository.

Under Secretary of Energy Kyle Haustveit stated that the initiative aims to lower costs and strengthen American energy dominance by converting domestic geothermal resources into reliable and affordable power.
