Ed Davey Proposes £17 Billion Income Tax Cut Plan

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey unveiled a £17 billion tax cut plan funded by rejoining the EU single market during the party's annual conference.

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey announced a £17 billion income tax cut plan during the party's annual conference in Brighton. The proposal seeks to raise the personal income tax threshold to £15,000 and increase the 40p higher rate threshold to approximately £56,000. Davey stated that the cuts would be funded by economic growth generated by rejoining the European Union's single market and customs union. Because negotiations would take time, the cuts would only be implemented in the final year of a parliament, potentially as late as 2034.

Davey positioned the plan to attract disillusioned Conservative voters and southern professionals, aiming to replace the Conservative Party as the primary pro-market opposition. He argued that the Liberal Democrats are the only reliable way to block a Reform UK premiership, characterizing that party's politics as an existential threat to Britain. He contrasted his approach with Reform UK, asserting that his party would cut taxes without reducing support for vulnerable citizens.

During the same speech, Davey proposed a global non-proliferation treaty to stop the development of super-intelligent AI. He also condemned far-right protesters and asserted that his party could potentially secure more MPs than the Conservatives in the next election, citing the party's success in 2024.
