Roblox Implements Biometric Age Verification Amid Child Safety Lawsuits
Roblox Corporation is deploying facial age estimation and global content ratings to restrict adult-minor communication following a lawsuit from Louisiana's attorney general.
Roblox Corporation is implementing a revamped age-verification system and standardized content ratings to combat child exploitation and predator activity. By the end of 2025, the platform will require age verification for in-game chat using a combination of facial age estimation via selfies, ID verification, and verified parental consent. These tools aim to restrict communication between adults and minors who do not have a real-world relationship.
These measures follow intense legal and regulatory pressure. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill filed a lawsuit in August 2025, alleging the platform is "overrun with harmful content and child predators" and prioritizes profit over safety. The company also faces private lawsuits in Oklahoma and Michigan, as well as previous scrutiny from the SEC and investigations into the banning of "vigilante" users who filmed themselves catching predators.
To address concerns regarding age-inappropriate content, Roblox partnered with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) to replace internal maturity labels with globally recognized systems, including the ESRB in North America and PEGI in Europe. Additionally, the company is utilizing Roblox Sentinel, an open-source AI tool designed to detect long-term behavior patterns indicative of child endangerment, alongside improved voice filters that analyze audio intonation.
