IBM Commits $10 Billion to Quantum Computing Roadmap
International Business Machines is deploying over 90 quantum computers and investing $10 billion to lead the race toward a trillion-dollar market by 2039.
International Business Machines is expanding its quantum computing infrastructure by deploying more than 90 systems through cloud and on-site installations. The company committed $10 billion to its quantum roadmap over the next five years and recently launched the Nighthawk r2 processor. This new hardware uses 120 programmable qubits to deliver 25 times the throughput of the previous Heron platform.
CEO Arvind Krishna expects the technology to influence the company's financial results by 2028 or 2029. He predicts that quantum computing could generate a trillion dollars of value by the end of the 2030s.
Other industry competitors are pursuing alternative technical strategies. IonQ and Quantinuum are utilizing trapped-ion technology to prioritize accuracy, with IonQ planning a 256-qubit system for next year and Quantinuum targeting fault-tolerant computing by 2029. Rigetti Computing is focusing on superconducting computing to increase processing speeds, aiming to develop a 1,000-qubit system within three years.
