Abdel Fattah al-Sisi Vows to Leave Office by 2030
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced he will not seek another term after 2030 and proposed a military-led training program to prepare future Egyptian leaders.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced on Saturday that his presidential term will end in 2030 and he will not seek another mandate. Speaking at a graduation ceremony for the Egyptian Military Academy, al-Sisi described the date as a settled matter and ruled out further constitutional amendments to extend his rule, dismissing speculation that he is grooming a relative to succeed him.
To ensure a capable transition of power, al-Sisi proposed a 30-month training program at the Egyptian Military Academy for up to 1,000 PhD holders aged 40 to 50 from reputable domestic and foreign universities. The initiative aims to prepare a new generation of leaders for roles including the presidency, ministries, governorates, and parliament. A committee featuring the speaker of parliament, intellectuals, politicians, and the ministers of higher education and justice will develop the selection criteria and necessary legislation.
Al-Sisi also called on parliament to pass legislation designating the armed forces as the protector of the state, democracy, and territorial integrity. In a separate regional development, he pledged support for Saudi Arabia against Ansar Allah attacks and sought parliamentary approval to provide assistance if requested. These announcements follow 2019 constitutional amendments that extended presidential terms to six years, allowing al-Sisi to remain in power until 2030.
