Swiss Government Appoints Christoph Ammann to Lead Bank Council

The Swiss government appointed Christoph Ammann as the next president of the Swiss National Bank's Bank Council. Ammann, a Social Democrat politician and former economy minister of the canton of Bern, has served on the council since 2019 and has held the vice presidency since last year.

Ammann will officially assume the presidency in May 2027. He succeeds Barbara Janom Steiner, who is stepping down after seven years of leadership due to her statutory term limit. Marc Mächler will take over Ammann's current role as the council's vice president.

While the Bank Council does not influence monetary policy, it maintains responsibility for overseeing the central bank's business operations. The council also organizes the succession of the three-member board that determines interest rates.
